Research Associate for Activist Labor Union/Oakland, CA Location: Oakland, CA Position Description: Research Associate / Oakland, CA Summary: Exciting research opportunities are available with SEIU – the Service Employees International Union – one of the most progressive and activist labor unions in the U.S. With 1.9 million members, SEIU is the largest and fastest growing union in North America. SEIU is a national leader in fighting for secure and affordable health care for all, living wages, affirmative action and the rights of all workers regardless of immigration status. SEIU’s Research Department provides critical support to a wide range of SEIU campaigns and initiatives. The Research Dept is integrated into all facets of campaigns, including industry and company analysis as part of identifying new markets for organizing, strategic research and development for ongoing campaigns and public policy analysis. The Research Associate will be hired by SEIU’s Research Dept or by one of the locals.
DUTIES INCLUDE:
Compiling and summarizing data on industries, companies, individuals and issues in support of campaigns
Analyzing financial, legal and regulatory aspects of industry and employers
Synthesizing relevant facts/issues from a large amount of data
Answering requests for information
Additional Qualifications:
REQUIREMENTS: Candidates should have most of the following:
One to three years of experience
Commitment to progressive social change and activist experience
Bachelor’s degree from accredited four-year college or university and/or prior research experience
Basic understanding of business, financial, economic, legal and political concepts and documents
Quantitative research skills and financial analysis
Excellent writing ability
Comfort with numbers and technology
Familiarity with a variety of computer-based research skills
Ability to work well under tight deadlines and in a team environment
Willingness to work long and irregular hours when needed to meet campaign demands.

Assist the Research Director in the overall implementation of empirically-driven research, evaluation, and demonstration projects. Specifically: (1) provide technical assistance on data systems and issues, eg., instrumentation, collection, management, analysis, and interpretation; and, (2) generate reports and data summaries for dissemination to funding agencies and key stakeholders.

Job Level: Mid-Level
Westat currently has openings for Clinical Research Associates to serve as liaisons with clinical centers and Westat's data management staff.
A strong interest in and aptitude for research monitoring and quality control are essential. Responsibilities include participating in clinical trials protocol development; developing procedures manuals for clinical trials protocols; training clinical staff; conducting site monitoring visits; reviewing data records and retrieving data; and working with data management and regulatory affairs staff.
Requires a bachelor's degree, preferably in nursing or another health-related field, plus clinical or research experience; a background in clinical trials is preferred. Attention to detail, a commitment to quality, excellent communication skills, and an interest in research methods are a must. Must be available to travel up to 10 days per month. Some positions may require international travel. Openings available in our Rockville headquarters and regional home-based offices.
