Description:

The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) seeks an individual to work as an ethnographer for a qualitative study of seven senior housing communities in Maryland. This study, funded by the National Institute on Aging (NIA), explores the experiences of older adults as related to social stigma and stigmatizing traits and behavior in a variety of housing types including active adult, independent living, assisted living, and nursing homes. Specific duties include: conducting participant observation and ethnographic interviews at research sites in the Baltimore metropolitan region; writing and disseminating fieldnotes; participating in bimonthly research team meetings; and analyzing data. The incumbent will be expected to author and coauthor scientific papers about the project and attend and present findings at professional conferences. In addition, the incumbent will perform other duties as assigned. This position reports to the study’s principal investigator and the Associate Director of the Center for Aging Studies.

Additional Qualifications:

Requires a Master’s degree (Ph.D. preferred) in the social sciences. Must have experience with conducting ethnographic field research and interviewing. Knowledge of aging and/or long-term care issues required. Training in qualitative analysis software is desired.
