The Council of Canadians is a national public interest group opposed to deeper integration with the United States and increased corporate control, and committed to protecting and reclaiming Canadian sovereignty by promoting better democracy.


Under the general direction of the Director of Campaigns and Communications, the Researcher/ Writer supports the work of the Political Team with campaign-related research in priority areas. The incumbent provides research and communications support to the campaigns and collaborates with other members of staff to ensure campaigns are effectively planned and implemented. The Researcher/Writer is responsible for cultivating and maintaining effective relationships with contractors, academics, research institutes, and other outside colleagues. As well, the Researcher/Writer is responsible for collaborating with other members of the Campaigns, Communications and Organizing Teams to ensure that all work of the Political Team is effectively planned and implemented, and with other Council staff to ensure the effective and efficient functioning of the National and Regional Offices. The Researcher / Writer will:
Contribute to the implementation of the Council’s campaign strategy;
develop and maintain Council expertise on priority campaign areas as assigned by the Director;
working with other members of the Political Team research and develop written materials including reports, action alerts, website posts, articles, fact sheets, brochures, briefing notes, op-eds and correspondence, including correspondence with different levels of government for signature;
monitor policy developments and ensure a timely and appropriate response from the Council;
monitor e-mails, web sites and correspondence and share relevant information with other Political Team staff;
contribute to Council publications and development materials as requested, develop appropriate relationships with media, politicians, bureaucrats and other key decision makers;
develop strategy together with members of the Political Team to achieve campaign goals;
in collaboration with relevant staff, assist with the writing of press releases, media interviews, acting as an expert spokesperson, etc.;
brief the Director and Executive Director on relevant campaign-related research;
respond to complex strategic information requests and correspondence (mail, email, phone, fax, etc.); and,
participate in team meetings to coordinate work, resolve operational issues and ensures harmonious relations amongst team members;
participate in regular joint work planning and work plan review sessions and annual performance evaluations;
contribute to the preparation of reports to the Executive Director and the rest of the organization as required


The qualifications for this position are:
commitment to the Council’s values, vision and directions;
relevant degree and/or equivalent educational qualifications and/or work qualifications;
excellent research and writing skills and experience;
superior knowledge of current national economic, social and political issues;
proven skills and experience in the planning and implementation of projects;
strong strategic thinking skills, conflict resolution and negotiating skills;
good interpersonal skills and the ability to exercise tact, discretion and judgment at all times;
proven administrative skills and an organized approach with an ability to prioritize and effectively handle many demands;
excellent communications skills, both oral and written;
capacity to work in a self-directed manner and demonstrated ability to work well within a team setting;
computer skills including familiarity with word processing, spreadsheet, communications and database software.
